One of our long time Las Vegas residents, Marquentta Porter, passed away on October 12, 2010. Marquentta was an entertainer who was a member of the singing group the Secrets, and performed with Ike and Tina Turner as an “Ikette”. As Ikettes, the group toured with Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars and performed on stage with entertainers Herman’s Hermits, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Billy Stewart, and Brenda Holloway. They also toured with Lou Rawls, and opened for Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. Marquentta appeared in the main showroom of the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas with John Rowles in 1971, and performed on shows with the Four Tops, the O’ Jays, the Whispers, and Stevie Wonder. After her singing career Marquentta became a Counselor for the Summer Youth Program and a Job Developer for Nevada Business Services. Marquentta was very involved with the community and became a member of the Links, Inc., Las Vegas Chapter, in 1977. She was the recipient of the Rose Award presented by the Professional Black Women's Alliance in 1994. Marquentta is survived by her children: Laronda, James Oran II and Marwan; and two sisters, Aquilla and Carmen.
