Jerry "Jake" Longero passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, August 5, 2010 at the South Lyon Medical Center, Yerington. He was 76.
Jerry was born in Reno, Nevada on November 9, 1933 the son of Eugene and Evelyn Longero. He grew up in Silver City and Gold Hills and his family moved to Carson City when he was in 7th grade. Jerry graduated from Carson City High School in 1952. He was an outstanding athlete, lettering in football, basketball and track. He graduated from UNR where he also participated in basketball and track. In 1957 he married Phyllis Crowder and in 1958 they moved to Yerington where he taught at Yerington High School. Jerry also coached and was the Athletic Director and was involved in the Yerington Relays for over thirty years. He was also very involved in the community, was past president of the 20 - 30 Club and Yerington Lions Club. He was Lion of the Year in 1991 and became a life member in 2002. Jerry also served on the Nevada State Fish and Game Commission from 1963-79. He served as chairman of the local Ducks Unlimited and was a member of the Canvasback Gun Club and for 10 years was a director for the Cystic Fibrosis Walk-a-Thon and was chairman of the Yerington Cemetery Board. In 2000 he was inducted into the NIAA Hall of Fame as an athlete, Coach and Contributor.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis; his son and Daughter-in-law, Dale and Susan Longero; his sister, Joy Amodei; his brothers, Ken and Donald; and his grandchildren, Brady and Jake; and his sister-in-law, Carrol and her husband Reed Baird and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Delbert and a sister, Ruth Caraway, and a daughter, Dawn.
Jerry's memorial service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, August 11th at the Yerington Intermediate School Gym, 114 Pearl St., Yerington. A reception will follow the service at the Casino West Convention Center.
