Don was born on Feb. 1, 1936 in rural Oklahoma, the son of Coley and Edith Barnes. He was the oldest son of six children. He spent 4 years in the United States Marine Corps before attending the University of Oklahoma for a year. In 1959, he moved to Southern California, where he started a family with his wife Marge.

He enjoyed volunteering as a Little League baseball coach, working outside in his garden and raising domestic livestock. He remarried in 1993 to Jeanne Rando.

After his retirement, Don spent countless weekends with his wife at their second home in Lake Tahoe. He also enjoyed tending to his cactus garden (that featured a “Yellow Brick Road”) and cheering on the University of Oklahoma Sooners football team.

He is survived by his wife Jeanne; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Michelle Barnes of Federal Way, Wash.; daughter Julie Hurd of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters Virginia Melvin of Lubbock, Texas and Vicki Chesney of Taylor, Texas; three grandsons Troy, Trevor and Jake; and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his brothers Corky, Karl and  Dean.
